Jay 周杰伦 is a 29 year old award-winning Taiwanese musician, singer, producer, actor and director. He bursted into the music scene under the record company Alfa Music with his debut album Jay in year 2000. He has the tendency to release an album a year. In March 2007, his 8-year contract with Alfa Music ended and he established a new recording company JVR Music together with his manager and long-time partner lyricist Vincent Fang Wen Shan(方文山). Jay only has two recording duets so far which are 珊瑚海 pairing with Lara of Nan Quan Ma Ma and 千里之外 with the legendary Fei Yu Ching. Right now, I would like post a modest review of President Chou's latest album On The Run which is the maiden album to be released by Jay's new recording company, JVR Music. I know it is a little too late to do this but On The Run remains fresh to me. Before he release On The Run, the first song of the album to conquer music stations worldwide was 牛仔很忙 if I am not wrong. It was the arguably controversial track that took the music scene by storm. It was a deviation from his usual music style and this further proves that Jay is a versatile singer and songwriter. Composed by Jay and penned by Huang Jun Lang, this song is quite a catchy tune. The second song on the album is 彩虹 (Rainbow) which has a sweet melody though it is a pretty simple tune. Written and penned by Jay himself, this song is one of my favorite in this album with its simple yet touching lyrics. Then on 青花瓷 (Blue and White), it has Zhong Guo Feng in it and has similarity with the previous Zhong Guo Feng songs like Ju Hua Tai. 無雙 (Unparalleled) is something completely different. It is a rock song and has Vincent Fang's lyrics on war and battle. It is a song to heat up your day. Other songs in the album are mainly Jay's trademark ballads. In my opinion, the ballads in this album had certainly improved compared to the previous ones. My favorite ballads this time are 蒲公英的約定 and 最長的電影 . You can never go wrong with Jay's ballads. 我不配 is a song that has a strong R&B feel in it. It is a catchy song that certainly places him a class above other singer-songwriters out there. Pop rock songs like 陽光宅男 (Sunshine Homeboy) and 甜甜的 (Sweet) are average ones but can certainly cheer up your day and put a smile on your face with the 'smack' sound in the song. However, there is something bothering me which is the sloppy production carried out by Jay but we can't really blame him because he's been very busy with his directing and acting career. Overall I rate this album 7 out of 10.
